The Best Place To Buy A Car Is At A Government Or Police Auction
June 29, 2008
If you’re thinking of buying a new vehicle soon, you should know that you can find the car of your dreams at a government or police auction. Whether it’s new or used; a car, truck or SUV; you can purchase it for just pennies on the dollar.
In years past these auctions were a closely guarded secret, out of the reach of the general public. And while you still can’t get into a dealer-only auction, you can go to one of your local open-to-the-public car auctions or check out one of the online public auction sites. It’s amazing how inexpensive shipping a car can be, particularly if you have saved thousands on the purchase of your new car.
You might ask if the public is taking advantage of these auctions. Unfortunately not, the majority of potential buyers seem to think that the cars are garbage even though a lot of them are newer models and well-maintained. Also, as previously mentioned, they still feel that it is difficult to find these auction sites.
Now you might be asking where these auctions get all the vehicles that they auction off. Top quality cars, trucks and SUVs are seized by police and government departments such as the DEA, IRS, ATF and the FBI all the time. Another source is company or fleet cars that are being upgraded. In both cases, the agencies involved simply want to get rid of them.
If you want to save a lot of money, go to a car auction. Public car auction prices are a lot better than regular retail prices for the same vehicle. You can find a great car, in super condition at a car auction if you know what you are looking for.
Don’t forget to do a mechanical inspection on the vehicle of your choice before bidding on it. Most newer cars still have a Manufacturer’s Warranty in place. To be sure that there aren’t any problems though, you really should take the time to give it a once over.
There are a few simple tests that you can perform yourself and if the prospective vehicle doesn’t pass these tests with flying colors, find another car! Start by placing your foot on the brake, and then putting the car in drive and reverse several times. Make sure the car doesn’t lunge at all or make a clunking sound when you shift into another gear. Take a moment to check for any leaking, spots, or stains under the car, and take a pass on any car where the oil is thick to the point of being pasty.
To get the most from a government or police auction, make sure you know what type of car/truck/SUV you’re looking for and its’ current market price so you can determine if you really are making a good purchase. Don’t forget to either do a mechanical once-over yourself, or have a qualified professional check under the hood. Remember, various government agencies or police departments are not in the used car biz - they simply want to get rid of these cars fast, and because of that you can be pretty sure you will be getting a great price. Welcome to the age of no haggling, no negotiating car purchasing.
