What Can You Do To Save Fuel?

November 29, 2008

People are thinking of and using ways to get better gas mileage because everyone is tired of spending outrageous amounts of money at the gas station.

Just about everyone knows that if you want to save gas, you need to drive slower. After all, that is common sense. Even though you can save a lot of gas by going slower on the highway, many people are unwilling to do so, for instance. The trick is to find ways to increase gas mileage without having to do things that you are not willing to do in the long term.

First and foremost, recognize that your vehicle really needs to have regular maintenance checks. It has been shown that having a clean air filter can give you 80% better gas mileage than a dirty one.

Two simple things that car owners can do to increase their gas mileage are changing their sparks and keeping their tires properly inflated.

To be sure you are optimizing your gas mileage, be sure that you are not like many drivers out there who are driving around with a car full of unnecessary things. For starters, remember to remove your bike rack or ski rack when not in season. For every 250 pounds of excess items in your car, you will loose one mile per gallon.

It is possible to save money on gas even when filling up at the gas pump. Save a few extra cents by not topping off the gas tank so that the amount is an even dollar amount. The small amount of gas will most likely not get into the tank properly thereby wasting money.

As a final note, be sure to use all the features your car has to offer. Using cruise control, for example, can help you get better gas mileage by eliminating the differences in pressure that you may put on the gas pedal.

It is vital that you not only know the methods for increasing gas mileage, but that you are consistent in their implementation, unless you want to keep visiting the gas station regularly!
