Why I Drive A Clunker

January 27, 2009

As a teen, I always wondered what sort of car I would wind up with. I definitely did not predict that I would be driving around an early 90s Honda with over two hundred thousand miles on it. There is no other way to look at it. I drive a beater.

Yes, I certainly have a beater. It is fairly reliable, working most of the time, but issues to crop up from time to time. I blow coolant hoses left and right, requiring seemingly simple yet annoying repairs to get working again. As I drive, the whole car shakes, rattles, and leaks liquid randomly.

If this is the case, why I am so glad to own this car? The reason can be summed up in a word: cheap. This car gets me around everywhere I need for next to nothing. It’s even survived a few long road trips (though those were slightly scary experiences at times). To sum up, it works.

At almost no cost to me, my vehicle fills all my transportation needs. I paid under $2000 for the car 6 years ago, which is very little. Even factoring in the repairs I’ve had to do, its still amazingly cheap.

That’s not the whole picture, of course. I have to pay insurance, which in my case is extremely cheap. I have the minimum amount of insurance required by law, which is quite inexpensive overall. This saves me even more money month after month.

Compare this to a new car. A newer car would cost me in payments, higher insurance, and more. While I would probably spend less in repairs, I still save a lot of money over time by keeping the clunker.

I realize that this approach isn’t for everyone. I even wish for a better car at times, but when I think how much freedom I have in my finances because of the clunker, I smile a bit to myself and continue driving.

How to find Cheap Trucking Insurance Quotes

January 25, 2009

The difference in price between truck insurance quotes and auto insurance quotes is drastic. This is simply because it costs more to repair or replace a truck, not to mention they are often hauling hundreds of thousands of dollars from place to place. Although it is expensive, you can easily save money compared to what you are paying now.

The most obvious factor used while adjusting your premium is your driving record. If your record is clean, you will be able to qualify for some of the lowest prices around. However, if you have had tickets or accidents in the last five years, you can expect your prices to rise.

Most Americans find that they pay a lot for their insurance if you combine auto, homeowners or renters, and trucking. If you are looking for a way to cut your spending, you can often consolidate your policies. Putting all of your policies with the same company qualifies you for substantial discounts.

If you are interested in saving even more money, you should talk to your agent about changing your deductibles. This does mean that if you do get in an accident, you will have to pay more. If you do change them you could save hundreds of dollars a year.

Another thing you want to be careful about is the amount of claims you file and the gravity of each one. Each time you report an accident or a repair to your insurance company you will see an increase in your rates. If the price of the repair is close to that of your deductible or even a little higher, don’t file it because you will be charged much more in the long run.

As you compare insurance companies, you will see that each one is a little different from the others. Because of this, each company’s prices will be different. When looking for new insurance, look in to more than one insurance provider to see which one will offer you the best price.

Some consumers feel nervous about shopping around for insurance, thinking that they don’t know enough, or that they won’t find the best deal. For those people it is smart to look into an insurance broker. They work with many insurance providers, and are able to find you the best price out of all the companies.

Georgia Auto Insurance Policy — Is It That Essential?

January 25, 2009

If you want to drive in nearly all countries it is mandatory that you get a minimum insurance coverage. Does this imply that the lone use of car insurance is to be law-abiding?

Folks who have this wrong mindset about their Georgia car insurance do themselves a lot of injustice. They seek for the lowest policy there is not considering if it provides the correct coverage or not.

You guessed right: Something occurs (No, they never knew it could happen to them) and then they start running around for solutions. The mildest scenario being the loss of their car or stuff related to them directly. This way they will only need to make do without those valuables. If you think it’swrong, think about those who end up losing all they have due to damages confered to people affected when they are at fault in an accident.

Definitely, you won’t want to be the main lesson that made others around you get wiser (in a negative sense). Therefore, ask yourself very vital questions before you pick an insurance policy. Look at things on the long run. If you’ll need a particular policy go for it even if it’s the minimum.

Apart from those who are totally immune to losses or accidents, car insurance isn’t just something that is to be done to meet the requirements of the law. This becomes very obvious if you ever need to make a claim. You really appreciate it if you got the right coverage for your circumstance.

This should not have been a problem if we all had several financial resources. For this reason, experts have dedicated much time to build sites that will help you make as much savings as possible (up to two thousand dollars sometimes). This is not the savings you make by getting policies that compromise you. Those sites teaches how to make considerable savings while getting the best coverage for you. You can take advantage of these quotes sites for massive savings.

Cheaper Hawaii Car Insurance — My Credit History?

January 24, 2009

The topic of interest in this article continues on my series on Hawaii auto insurance savings. Here, I will bring your attention to yet another thing that is used by most insurance companies to determine your risk level. This factor has a deep effect on your rates…

Ensure that you keep a good credit record. Those who are into commerce will readily understand the logic behind this argument…

How you handle your bills certainly is an indicator of your values. An insurance carrier will assume that you are more responsible and a smaller risk if the records show that you pay your bills in a timely manner.

Insurance companies assume that those who miss payment of their regular bills are less likely to give more attention to details in other areas of their lives. Yes, driving inclusive. For them a pattern of negligence with personal bills means general irresponsibility which is often carried on behind wheels.

If you have a bad record, you have neglected your payments and that’s not good news for insurance providers. It suggests that you may also default in premium payments or might even be declared bankrupt as a worst case scenario.

So what do you think will happen to your insurers in such situation? That’s a topic for another discourse. Its side effect on the premium you will pay is our main focus here.

The insurance company simply adds to your rate since you are a higher risk to them. You can see your premium doubled in some cases if you skipped two payments on a credit card. Defaulting in your credit card payments for a certain number of times can even result in termination of your insurance contract.

Although you already know you should, try to maintain a great credit record. It does affect your car insurance rate.

An excellent credit history can bring savings that would be impossible otherwise. A client with an excellent history is loved by everyone in business. Such persons are not likely to default on their premiums. Insurance companies know this and love such people for it.

I’ve told you that your credit history can help you make some savings. I know you are eger to know how so here it is: There are many sites out there that send you Hawaii auto insurance quotes once you complete their form. Locate as many of them as you can and get quotes from each. From the quotes returned, compare to see the most cost-effective offer. You can make savings of over $1000 sometimes just by doing this properly.

Do All Car Rental Companies Offer One-Way Rentals?

January 24, 2009

Car rental companies are all about satisfying their customers, so they offer a wide array of services. Some of the services are needed and others are not. There is also the fact that there are a lot of add-ons that people may or may not need. But what about those things that you may need, but you find out they may not have? What special things do you need out of a car rental company?

Of those things that are needed by some individuals are one-way rentals. One-way rentals allow an individual to rent the car in one city, drive it to another, and then leave it at another location owned by the rental company. In other words, they do not have to drive the car back to its original location. This is great for those individuals who are moving to another destination. This is also great for those wishing to drive to their destination, but then fly, ride the train, or ride a bus back.

A scenario

Here is a perfect scenario as to why someone may need a one-way rental: Lets say that someone drives 12 hours away from home. They drove instead of flew because they wanted to take the time out to be on the road alone and enjoy the sights. However, they get a phone call that tells them there is an emergency and they need to come home as soon as possible. The only way they are going to be able to achieve that is if they buy a plane ticket in order to get home quickly. However, they have an issue on their hands and that issue is that they have the rental car and they are not sure what to do. They surely cant drive back home and make it back in a reasonable amount of time.

This is where a one-way rental comes in. They go to another location owned by their rental car company such as car rental Calgary and find out that they can just drop the car there so that they can catch a flight home.

Do they all offer one-way rentals?

As for whether or not all rental car companies offer one-way rentals, the truth is that they dont. The reason is because not all car rental companies are nationwide companies. There are smaller companies that you may find in your local area that may be a one location type of company or they own very few throughout the country. The national chains, on the other hand, they do offer one-way rentals. You probably wont find a company with locations all over the country that doesnt offer one-way rentals to their customers.

There are just so many reasons why someone may need a one-way rental that the company would be hurting financially if they didnt offer that option. Customers would simply go to another company that did offer the service. Thats how a lot of companies make a lot of money. They offer services such as this.

Dont fret So if you need a one-way car rental or truck rental, dont fret because this is definitely an option that you can take. It is nothing to be afraid of asking about. Theyre not going to look at you strange if you say you want a one way ticket to your destination. They are going to tell you where their location is in the town you are going so that you know where to drop of the car. If you need any other information regarding the drop off, you can simply ask and they will answer your questions. Just dont forget to shop around before committing to one company.

Electrical cars and the benefits of converting

January 24, 2009

The car, by and large, has been indispensable. However, the environment has been adversely affected by the gas engine. A car that ran on an all electric motor would solve a lot of our present pollution problems. This is just one of the options available to us.

The benefits of running your car on electricity are numerous. That is one of the options available to people today. There are quite a few benefits for running your car on electricity.

This article explores some of the major benefits of converting your car to run on electricity:

Protecting the environment: Global warming is one of the most ecological threats facing us today. The fumes emitted from gas engines would be eliminated if you were running on an electric vehicle. There are no air pollutants emitted when using an electric motor.

Driving an electric powered car would greatly reduce the pollutants such as noise, smoke and carbon dioxide. As you know, reducing pollution is one of the best ways to protect the planet.

Saves natural resources: With the more and more use of gas cars, the natural resources like crude oil are being used up in a rapid rate. A change to electric cars would enable us to use the natural resources for a relatively longer span of time.

Save money:

Converting your gas car to an electric powered car would comparatively be a small investment. Moreover, it is not a recurrent but a onetime expenditure. Once you change your car to an electric car, it will run smoothly for a long time.

Never again will you have to look for a gas station. Running on electricity would eliminate the need for gas ever again. Running on electricity will reduce the maintenance on your vehicle.

An electrical vehicle is estimated to be about five times less to run than a typical gas engine.

Easy to Handle: A car driven by fuel involves great complication in engineering. So, handling of such cars may prove to be difficult at times. An electrical car is simple to handle and so it is comparatively easier to drive.

No Loss of Speed: Electric vehicles can go up to if not more than 80 miles per hour. They might not go as fast over all of a gas engine car but it will get you around town just fine.

A Noise-free Drive: One of the biggest benefits of possessing an electrical car is enjoying a peaceful, noise-free ride. Electric cars are comparatively quieter than the average noisy smog-cougher.

True electric cars have certain disadvantages. The biggest is having a limited driving distance before you have to recharge.

But the disadvantages of electric cars are nothing if compared to the whole gamut of benefits they offer.

Comparing Smartbars And Bullbars, Facing The Facts

January 24, 2009

I own a jeep. I’ve always owned jeeps. From the old 70s CJ models to the newer, way more comfy (or so my wife tells me) cherokees. I don’t know why I do, but I’ve always loved them.

On a recent trip, I hit a kangaroo at a low speed. Thankfully the kangaroo bounded off with little more than a fright and there was basically no damage to the vehicle. The incident got me thinking about frontal protection though. If I were going any faster, the damage to the jeep could have been significant, leaving us stranded and putting my family in harms way.

So I called my mates at All Vehicle Accessories in Melbourne. They told me about these innovative new “plastic bullbars”. Having not heard about them before and being a bit bewildered by the chat (I mean, how can plastic protect my jeep?) I decided to do some research. This is what I found out.

There are 3 things a bullbar (or frontal protection device) is supposed to protect. These are the vehicle, the passengers in the vehicle, and the object being struck in a collision.

Its pretty funny when you look around for information on the relative safety performance of bullbars and smartbars. People who love bullbars keep pointing out that at 150kms/h a collision will be fatal. So to be clear, we are not looking at the 150kms/h collission. Rather we are comparing performance of these products at speeds up to and including fatal impact, but not exceeding it. That means at speeds which are less than and equal to the point where a collision becomes fatal to the vehicle, passengers or pedestrian.

The difference between the performance of bullbars and smartbars comes about because bullbars are rigid (Ie they have no give in them) while smartbars are not. (Ie. they are made from polyethylene with a hollow internal structure so they have some give) Despite all the opinion to the contrary, at speeds leading up to fatal impact, smartbars work better than bullbars in protecting you, the car and the person you hit. The manner in which they absorb impact minimises the force of the collision and thereby reduces injury and damage. The cushioning effect of this absorbtion actually acts to decelerate the colliding forces at the point of impact. This has been proven by independent child head-form impact tests. You just have to do a little research to find the studies.

To put this point in perspective though, into words you can feel, smartbars are made out of similar materials that they make those big wheelie bins from. Imagine you fell over in the street and smacked your head into a big iron postal box. It would hurt right? Now compare the same fall if your head hit the middle of one of those big wheelie bins. The bin would cushion the impact somewhat and the damage to your forehead would not nearly be so bad. (Or painful for that matter) Thats the way the smartbars work.

If you enjoy your vehicle, performance will always be a topic on your mind. The cost of fuel, tyre wear, suspension wear, handling in extreme weather. They are all issues for regular drivers. One thing that no-one questions, is that smartbars are significantly lighter than bullbars. Do you know what this means? Better fuel efficiency, longer tyre and suspension wear, easier and safer handling. Smartbars by their lighter composition allow your vehicle to perform better. Simple.

And then there is maintenance. One thing I’ve learned to hate about 4WDing over the years is the polishing, buffing and the pure elbow grease required to keep metal parts rust free and shiney. With the smartbar, there are no metal parts. A bucket of soapy water and a sponge is all you need to clean it and get back to planning your next trip.

These are the facts I’ve found when comparing the traditional bullbar against the newer smartbar alternative. I encourage you to do your own research when considering frontal protection, I’m sure new information about these products will come up in the future, but currently to my mind, there is no choice. I know which product my front fender will be sporting tomorrow.

Ten Ways to be a Better Driver

January 23, 2009

Every state in the U.S. requires would be drivers to study a driving manual, practice driving under the supervision of a licensed driver, and successfully pass written tests and driving tests.

But, take just a three hour drive and it’s hard to believe licenses are not given to anyone who wants one. In just a few hours, you will experience horrible driving of all kinds, from the person paying more attention to a cell phone or a cup of coffee than to the road to the NASCAR wannabe who moves from lane to lane, cutting off anyone in his or her way, to the person who drives in the far left lane at 10 miles below the speed limit. If you want to be at the other end of the driving spectrum, try these ten rules.

1. Do not ever drink and drive. As few as two drinks can impair you to some degree.

2. Follow safely; at least two seconds behind the vehicle you are trailing. If others are following too closely, leave even more room between your vehicle and those in front of you.

3. If a car is following you too closely to be able to stop safely in the event you have to stop quickly, pull over and let it pass. As annoying as that may be to do, it could save your life or the life of one of your passengers.

4. Adjust all of your mirrors with great care. Make note of your blind spots and drive accordingly.

5. Never assume that other drivers will stop at red lights or stop signs. Always look before driving through an intersection.

6. Note the bad drivers and take special precautions when you are in close proximity to them.

7. Anticipate and drive defensively at all times.

8. Adjust your driving in inclement weather, when roads are wet or icy, when lighting is poor, or when roads are rough or under construction.

9. Replace worn tires, brakes, windshield wipers, etc. immediately when required.

10. You should never make a driving move that requires another driver to slow down or change direction. If you do, you are part of the problem.

Driving is not a forgiving activity. Any mistake can lead to serious injury, or worse. So, do everything you can to make it more pleasant and safer for everyone on the roadways.

How To Increase Kilometers Per Liter With HHO Generators

January 23, 2009

Would you like to know how to improve kilometers per litre. Fuel prices go up or vary from day to day and globally some countries pay more than we do for our petrol. You could buy a hybrid but they cost much more compared to comparable vehicles. If you keep up on the maintenance and repairs of your current vehicle you should be able to maintain peak performance of he engine and in some cases if an engine diagnostic is performed and a problem is discovered you could find that you increase kilometers per litre. If you live in certain countries miles per gallon is a standard. Regular scheduled maintenance and tune ups should help you get the best mpg. Many newer vehicles only require tune ups around 150,000 kilometers.

Can you remember the last time a tune up was done on your car? If you bought your car off a used car lot you may have no service records to go by. When you buy a used car for sale ask for all service records. It there are none than ask if they will do a complete tune up or maintenance check before the sale. If you notice a rough idle or a decrease in gas mileage or performance then consider scheduling a tune up or engine diagnostics check.

Peak kilometers per litre will be consistent on your car when your vehicle is taken in for regularly schedule service and maintenance checks including oil changes. An engine diagnostics check often can discover faulty sensors that may have a negative impact on your kilometers per litre. A perfect example is a faulty oxygen sensor that is replaced can improve kilometers per litre up to 40%. It pays to have your car or truck regularly serviced and an engine diagnostics performed if a check engine light comes on or you notice a noticeable decrease in kilometers per litre.

Always get oil changes every 5000 kilometers or no longer than what your vehicles owner manual suggests. Dirty oil can reduce kilometers per litre up to 2%. Other tips and secrets include changing out that dirty air filter. Clogged air filters when replaced may be one of you better cost replacement savers, a dirty filter you can increase gas mileage up to 10%. Taking extra weight out of your vehicle can also add kilometers to your tank of gas. The only other option if gas prices are eating your wallet for breakfast and you drive a fuel guzzler truck or SUV is to look for used cars and buy one that gets better kilometers per litre if you can not afford a new car.

So if a hybrid car is out of the question and your cars maintenance is done regularly what else can you do for the best kilometers per liter. Your probably already using maps and fuel charts and an expensive exotic electric hybrid is not practical. There are fuel additives and those work by keeping you engine and fuel lines clean so there is no buildup. They can also help keep fuel injectors clean further increasing kilometers per litre. Most fuel saving devices do not work but some do and it it may be hard to chose a good fuel saving device from a scam product.

One of the latest devices that is gaining in popularity and getting mention even in the news is HHO gas generators. HHO gas can be generated from a HHO generator gas car kit or plans and blended with your current petrol or diesel gasoline which may give you the best kilometers per liter. HHO gas generator is introduced into the intake manifold and most HHO plans or kits are easy to follow for simple construction or installation. Some refer to such a systems as hydrogen on demand. A simple HHO fuel cell is can easily fit under the hood of a car and in larger engines more than one cell can further improve kpl. This technology is experimental but because it can be constructed or installed at home most basic starter kits can be made relatively inexpensive if you shop around and price parts. HHO gas kits are helping people who implement this technology get the best kilometers per litre or 15-40% on average and in some cases much higher. The other benefits besides improving kilometers per liter is an increase in power and usually improved emissions.
